Vaginal dryness is a condition, which occurs when the vagina is not properly lubricated, that is the person, feels it itchy and irritated. Vaginal dryness makes the daily activities of life very uncomfortable. It also makes the sexual intercourse less pleasurable.

Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness commonly leads to painful sex known as dyspareunia. Vaginal dryness affects generally the women of all ages. It is believed that near about 10 percent to 40 percent menopause shows the symptoms related to vaginal dryness. Other symptoms included in vaginal dryness are like dryness, Itching, burning sensation, irritation, etc. There is also a feeling of pressure and there is pain or light bleeding with sex.

Causes of Vaginal Dryness

There are various causes leading to Vaginal Dryness, which are as follow:

Decreased estrogen levels are the chief causes of vaginal dryness. Estrogen is a female hormone, which helps to keep the vaginal tissue healthy. Acidity creates a natural defense against vaginal and urinary tract infections. But when the estrogen decreases, then this natural defense and the amount of vaginal lubrication also decrease. The decreased estrogen leads to less elastic and more fragile vaginal lining. Estrogen levels fall in case of menopause, surgical removal of ovaries decreased sexual activity, immune disorders, etc.

In case of Sjogren’s syndrome also there is vaginal dryness. Some cancer treatment medications such as tamoxifen interfere with the estrogen and thus result in vaginal dryness. Allergy mediations such as antihistamines can dry out of vaginal membranes. Certain ulcer, antidepressant drugs and high blood pressure also leads to vaginal dryness.

Douching that is the process of cleaning the vagina with a liquid preparation disrupts the normal vagina and causes inflammation known as Vaginitis. This also leads to the dryness of vagina. Lack of proper vaginal lubrication can occur in certain conditions, which leads the vagina to feel dry. There conditions are like vaginal trauma, vaginal bacterial infection, chronic yeast infection, Benign or malignant tumour, etc.

Treatment of Vaginal Dryness

It is because the loss of estrogen is the chief cause of vaginal dryness; therefore, estrogen therapy is best indicated. It includes the vaginal estrogen cream and the vagina three times a week. It also includes the vaginal estrogen rings, vaginal estrogen tablets, Skin patches containing estrogen or oral hormone supplements, etc.

There are certain self care measures used to prevent vaginal dryness. For example if the vaginal dryness makes sexual intercourse painful then lubricants such as water based lubricants are inserted into the vagina before intercourse. There are certain vaginal moisturizers, which help to moisten the vagina for a longer period than lubricants.

They may decree dryness for more than one day with a single application and so it generally helps in maintaining the acidic environment in the vagina and may help decreased infection. Person should also avoid certain products, which leads to vaginal irritation any finally vaginal dryness. These products are like vinegar yogurt or other douches, hand lotions, soaps, bubble baths, etc. Moreover, incorporation of certain items in the diet also helps in increasing moisture in the vagina
