Information on Steaming
Bookmark and Share

Streaming is defined as a technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a steady and continuous stream. Streaming technologies are becoming increasingly important with the growth of the Internet because most users do not have fast enough access to download large multimedia files quickly.

With streaming, the client browser or plug in can start displaying the data before the entire file has been transmitted. For streaming to work, the client side receiving the date must be able to collect the data and send it as a steady stream to be application that is processing the date and converting it to sound or pictures.

This means that if the streaming client receives the data more quickly than required, it needs to save the excess data in a buffer. If the data doesn’t come quickly enough, however, the presentation of the data will not be smooth.

There are a number of completing streaming technologies emerging. For Example-the streaming media. To understand the role of streaming media, we will need to understand the function of the World Wide Web. Web servers are often described as stateless.

What that basically means is that the Web server takes a request for information out the door as fast as it can, completes the transaction, disconnects and goes on to other requests by other users. On the client side, the web browser takes the information it receives, assembles it on the screen , server.

In all, Web transactions between the server and client are pretty much like the end bar. A quick exchange and a rapid parting in the morning. This stateless approach works very well for media like graphics and text. Feed them into the browser and simply slap them on the screen. But moving images and sound are problematic.

Unlike a graphic, video, animation and sound have a time element to them. With that time dimension, often comes a larger file size. Under the stateless approach, a Web user would need to download the entire video clip before it can be viewed. With streaming media the goal is to bypass the limitations of the World Wide Web. Using Internet based technologies that are mostly proprietary, media data is fed to the user as the media is viewed. So rather, than a stateless date connection, streaming media is more of a continuous connection.

There is a commitment there. Much like TV or listening to the radio, person receive the images or audio just before we see hear them. So, much like other Internet based forms of delivery, working with streaming media is all about compromises.

Media producers, especially those with television backgrounds, often criticize the quality of streaming media. Streaming media is not about quality. It’s about access. It’s an office and receive content on-demand from Anchorage. Throughout the history of all forms of media, the new medium has often paled in comparison to the old one.

But the new medium offers some capability that the old one does not. With streaming media, it is all about the access. The pictures may be fuzzy and the sound occasionally garbled. Fortunately, the streaming tools are rapidly growing more and more powerful. The quality today is significantly better than the quality six months ago. And it continues improve at a phenomenal rate.
