Skin Cysts![]() Skin cysts may be defined as a sacs or capsules that are formed in the skin or inside the body. Cyst may contain fluid or semisolid material. Cysts may be present any where in the body but most common sites are like ovaries, skin, breasts or kidneys. Most of the cysts are benign and not malignant in nature. Symptoms of Skin CystsThere are varieties of symptoms produced by cyst. These symptoms depend upon the type of cyst and its location. If the cyst occurs in skin then it is found to be slows growing and painless. Such types of cysts are usually small in size but few of then can grow upto the size of golf balls. If the cyst ruptures or becomes infected then there will be signs of inflammation noted, that is redness, swelling and tenderness on the affected area. Skin cysts are also known as sebaceous cysts. They generally appear as flesh coloured or whitish yellow lumps beneath the skin. These cysts are formed inside glands that secrete on oily substance known as sebum. It has been seen that when secretions of normal gland becomes trapped then those glands develop themselves into a pouch which gets filled up with a thick, cheese like substance. Commonly such forms of cysts are found on the back of the neck, the upper back and the scalp. Cysts found in the wrist region appear suddenly they are felt to be tender on touching. Cysts present on the skin are just visible and thus the patient must have the knowledge of first time when he/she noticed the cyst or how quickly the cyst has grown. Person must know that whether the size of cyst has changed or not and whether it is painful. It has been known that the cyst present in breast does not produce any symptoms. But when it becomes infected, then it becomes tender on touching. Kidney cysts generally lead to abdominal pain and sometimes it also leads to passage of blood in urine. Moreover, when the ovarian cyst ruptures, it causes sudden, severe pain on the lower abdomen or upper part of pelvis. Skin cysts are usually looked for redness, tenderness and size and shape of a cyst. Often visual inspection of skin cyst is needed and it serves the purpose of diagnosis. Researchers have found that there is no exact way to prevent the causation of such cysts. Treatment of Skin CystsThe need for treatment and type of treatment depends upon the form of cyst, which has occurred. Treatment plan also depends upon the location of cyst and symptoms produced by it. It has been generally considered that if the cyst does not causes any symptom or it does not produces any serious health problem then it does not require treatment. But if the cyst becomes large or infected then it is advisable to show to the doctor, as draining of the cyst may be required. In case of the skin cyst, there is also present capsule, which surrounds the cyst entirely, and hence, it also requires removal. Moreover, removal of such capsule also prevents the chances of recurrence of cyst. But commonly, skin cysts are found to grow slowly in size and they usually go away by themselves and so no drainage is required. The prognosis for the majority of cysts is very good. Even surgically removal or draining of the cysts usually shows no complications or side effects.
