Morning Sickness

About 75% of the pregnant women have nausea and sometimes vomiting during their first trimester. For some, the condition is worse in the morning and gets better over the daytime; hence, it is known as Morning Sickness.

The nausea usually starts of 6 weak of pregnancy but it can come on as early 4 weeks and tends to worsen over the next month or so. About half of women who get it feel complete relief by about 14 weeks. For most of the rest, it takes another month or so far the getting down of relief.

Causes and Symptoms of Morning Sicknes

The exact cause of nausea during pregnancy is not known. But it occurs mainly due to combination of the many physical changes taking place in the body. The main causes are as follow:-

Rapidly increasing levels of the hormone HCG during early pregnancy. It is not known that why HCG causes nausea. But the timing is right, nausea tends to peak around the same time as the level of HCG rises. Estrogen is though to play a role too.

An enhance/increased sense of smell and sensitivity to odours. It‘s not uncommon for a newly pregnant woman to find that she’s now overwhelmed by the smell of a bologna sand wish from four blocks away.

Morning sickness can also be caused by a Vitamin B deficiency. While taking a Vitamin B6 supplement does seem to help to get rid off nausea in many pregnant women.

Some people say, women are psychological predisposed to have nausea and vomiting during pregnancy as an abnormal response to stress.

Treatment of Morning Sickness

Pregnant lady should try to avoid foods and smells that trigger nausea. It’s okay to just eat the few things that appeal to the pregnant woman, even if they don’t add up to a balanced diet. It is always recommended to stick to food, which are cold, or at room temperature. It is because such foods have less odour than hot food.

Pregnant woman should eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, so that the stomach is never empty. Some women feel carbohydrate diet more appealing while others that high protein food works better.

Pregnant women should better keep simple snacks, such as crackers by their bedsides. It is because if she wakes up at night, then she should nibble few crackers and then rest for 20 to 30 minutes before getting out of bed.

Pregnant woman should avoid fatty foods, which take longer to digest, particularly during pregnancy, when the stomach takes longer to empty. She should also avoid rich spicy, acidic and fried foods, which can irritate the stomach and digestive system.

Pregnant women should try drinking fluids primarily between meals. She should not try to drink so much at once that makes her less hungry for food. If she has been vomiting a lot, then she should try a sports drink that contains glucose, salt and potassium to replace lost electrolytes.

Pregnant ladies should take time to relax and they should take naps if they or visit a friend can help reliance stress and take the mind out of discomfort.

Pregnant women should take the prenatal vitamins with food or just before bed. She should take vitamin B6.
