Infertility is generally defined as not being able to get pregnant despite trying for one year. In other sense, we can say that infertility means-not being able to carry to pregnancy to term and are unable to produce a baby.

Causes of Infertility

In normal case Pregnancy follows through a chain of event. For this to occur, the women must release an egg from one of her overies, that process is known as ovulation. Then the egg must travel through the fallopian tube towards her uterus, that is the womb.

During this process, a man’s sperm should join with fertilized egg along the way. The fertilized egg must then become attached to the inside of the uterus. In general, these things can happen in the mid white to prevent pregnancy from occurring.

In case of men, the infertility occurs due to problem in making sperms or in getting the sperm to reach the egg. Problems with sperm may exists from birth or develop later in life due to illness or the injury. In some cases, men produces no sperm or they produce to little number of sperms.

Normally, it has been observed that the life style can influence the number and quality of a man’s sperm. Moreover, alcohol and drugs can temporarily reduce the sperm quality. There are some environmental toxins like pesticides and lead which can lead to some cases of infertility in men.

In case of women, infertility is chiefly, due to problems in ovulation. Without ovulation, the eggs are not available to be fertilized. Sings of problems with ovulation include irregular menstrual periods or no periods. Some lifestyle factors like stress, diet or athletic training can also affect the woman’s hormonal balance. Moreover, ageing is also one of the factor responsible for female infertility.

Particularly after the age of 35, the ability of woman’s ovaries to produce eggs decreases. And it has been known that by the time, the woman reaches menopause, that is when her monthly periods stop then she is no longer able to produce eggs or become pregnant. Other reasons for infertility in women are like if the fallopian tubes are blocked at one or both ends. Then in this case, the egg can’t travel through the tubes into the uterus.

Test for Infertility

A medical examination, determines the reasons for a couple’s infertility. For a man, testing usually begins with tests of his semen in order to look at the number, shape and movement of his sperm. For a woman, the first step in testing is to find out if she is ovulating each month. Other common female tests includes-laparoscope’s and Hysterosalpingo gram.

Treatment for Infertility

Normally, most of the infertility cases are treated with drugs or surgery. There are various fertility drugs which may be used for women suffering with ovulation problems. Depending on the type of fertility drug and the dosage of the drug used, multiple births such as twins can occur in some women.
