Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons that is the soft fibrous tissues in the body.

Most of the patients, suffering from Fibromyalgia say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn.

Women are more commonly affected than then and it is seen in people of all ages. Every muscle of the body of sufferers shouted out in pain. In addition, they felt deprived of energy as though someone had unplugged their power supply.

It has been observed that the severity of symptoms fluctuate from person to person. Fibromyalgia may also resemble a post viral state. Due to this reasons, the experts in the field of Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic Fatigue Syndrome believe that these two syndromes may be one and the same.

Causes of Fibrmyalgia

There are various causes of Fibromyalgia, which leads to its onset. Like a viral or bacterial infection, an automobile accident or the development or another disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or hypothyroidism.

These triggering events may awaken an underlying physiological abnormality that is already present. These abnormalities may be like theories pertaining to alterations in pain related chemical transmitters, immune system function, sleep physiology and hormonal irregularities.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

The pain of Fibromyalgia has no boundaries. People describe the pain as deep muscular aching, throbbing, shooting and stabbing. Intense burning may also be present. The pain and stiffness are worse in the morning. Fatigue is generally milk in some patients and yet incapacitating in others. The fatigue has been described as ‘brain fatigue” in which patients feel totally drained of energy. Most fibromyalgia patients have and associated sleep disorder.

This condition was uncovered in a sleep lab with the aid of a machine, which recorded the brain waves of patients during sleep. Constipation, diarrhoea, frequent abdominal pain, abdominal gas and nausea are the common symptoms found in fibromyalgia patients. Acid reflux or gastro esophageal reflux disease also occurs with the same high frequency.

Recurrent migraine or tension-type headaches are seen in near about 70% of fibromyalgia patients. Premenstrual syndrome and painful periods, chest pain, numbness and tingling sensations, dry eyes and mouth, etc. are the common symptoms. Patients are usually sensitive to odours, loud noises, bright lights, etc.
