How To Get Smoky Eyes

Smoky eyes have been a popular style for quite awhile now and this trend doesn’t look like it will fade anytime soon. Proper blending is the key to getting the best smoky eye look. You should blend the colors of your makeup flawlessly. Rich dark colors should be paired with light base colors. Individuals have used good mixes such as a soft gold base with deep purple on top, a champagne base with bright blue on top and a peach base with green hue on top.

Start with the eye makeup first before applying foundation. It’s easier to clean up any fallen shadow without messing up your entire makeup. This also avoids the dark raccoon look under the eye. With a circular sponge, loose powder was used to “set” the skin.

Apply concealer. There are many ideas with respect to what is the perfect shade of concealer. Many makeup artists recommend using two shades lighter than your foundation. This can be tricky especially on women with olive complexions and darker skin tones. My recommendation is to get it first from a department store or a makeup store such as  Mac or Sephora. In these shops, trained technicians can help you select the right shade.

Apply eyeliner perectly. Apply your base eyeshadow all over the upper eyelid. Blend well with a base brush. Smudge both lashlines with a cotton swab or an eyeliner brush.

Blend in color on bottom lashes for color on the bottom (a key smokey eye look) you’ll want a lighter eyeliner & the key is to ’smudge it’. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.

Apply light base color Again, the key to a smoky eye is pairing a lighter base with the darker hue. I prefer a nice cream shade for my base. Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your browbone. I love Stila’s whipped eye shadows $20. The moist ‘mousse’ consistency seems to stay on forever. My favorite colors are taupe & pearl.

Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base & eyeliner on, it’s time to get the smoky effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line & blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease.

The crease is very important to the smokey eye and it needs special attention. With a taupe colored shadow, or a mixture of gray and brown, pick up a small amount (to begin), and work it into the crease area. Continue until the area is well defined, with lots of attention to the blending process. Remember, the look we are after is smokey.
