How To Choose The Right Concealer

Pick the right shade. The correct concealer color should mimic the undertones in your skin, whether they be pink, yellow, olive, or brown. This is often referred to as warm or cool. You should also match the brightness. You can tell one concealer is brighter than the other because it will appear less grey. The closer you match the concealer to your skin color, the better job it will do of covering up what you don’t want to be seen.

Decide on color and concentration. The thicker the concealer concentration, the better it will be at masking a big imperfection. When it comes to correcting the color, usually greenish-yellow or blue is best for blasting out redness, while pink or yellow is helpful for neutralizing dark undereye circles.

Foundation

Since a thick heavy foundation stick will conceal your imperfections, it is also known at times as a concealer. Some women will also purchase true concealer products in their skin tone to cover blemishes. What makes foundation ultimately better as a blemish disguise is it’s availability in a variety of shades to more accurately match your skin tone. While the lighter color of a concealer hides the dark shadows and marks on your face, to cover redness and bumps you really need a product that will perfectly blend into the rest of your face.

Choose a concealer that is a couple of shades lighter than your skin tone. Yellow-based concealers are often a preferred choice since they correct dark undertones while concealing. A too-light or too-dark concealer will look unnatural even with a perfect application. Go for a shade that either matches or is one shade lighter than your skin. Remember that it is not your choice that dictates the color of concealer but your skin tone and blemish.

Choose a creamier concealer to cover up dark eye circles. This area is delicate and dry. Liquid concealer is the best choice for dry skin and under-eye makeup.

It is sometimes helpful to try testers of yellow-based concealer, since some other colors can leave you colored rather than concealed.

It is very smart to either try samples before you purchase from a makeup line or to make sure that the store you are purchasing from will allow a return if it doesn’t match you.

If you are looking for a concealer for the summer months, choose a darker shade, since your skin will probably have more color.

When you apply your concealer, remember these guidelines:

Concealer should always be applied before foundation. Make sure your skin is cleansed and moisturised, as concealer tends to settle into fine lines on dry skin.

Use concealer under your eyes, but never use a lighter shade on this area as it will lead to ‘raccoon eyes’. Rather use a yellow or peach toned shade.

Other places to use concealer are along the nose and on the chin. Remember to blend the edges into your neck area to keep the look natural looking.

To pinpoint shadows you need to cover tilt your head downwards and look straight into a mirror.

Concealer can be applied with your finger or with a small, stiff brush. You should always blend concealer with your ring finger as it is the weakest finger and least likely to damage the delicate skin under your eye.

To conceal dark circles apply under the eye right up to the lower lashes. Remember to do the inner corner of the eye and blend right up to the nose.
