Birthmarks

Birthmarks are the marks that are present on the skin of the newborn babies. Birthmarks may be present either before the baby is born or they may be formed soon after birth. The birthmarks may persist form entire life or they may fade away in due course of time.

Generally, the birthmarks are not a health hazards. But then also regular check up from doctor is necessary. For eg if the birthmarks are near the eye, they are highly problems marks and so require carefully observation. Moreover, the birthmarks that are located on the lower spine also needs special attention.

Marks on the face or neck, even if they are smaller in size, disturbs the child psychologically. They fell so embarrassing and develops pessimistic (depressive ) attitude. Hence, in such cases, special make up are used to hide the affected area.

But some people consider birthmarks as a positive sign. They does not consider birthmarks as a disfiguring agent that need to be removed. But instead they think birthmark as a sign of their child’s uniqueness and find them attractive.

What Do Birthmarks Look Like :

Birthmarks are red coloured spots, that are raised and appear in about ten percent of babies. Sometimes, they fades away within few months but sometimes takes years. They generally disappears by the age of five. They are generally raised are also known as crimson strawberry marks.

Birthmarks may also appear in the form of brown marks which may be permanent dark or light brown in colour. They are (brown marks) in the form of flat patches and are organized in clusters.Birthmarks are also observed in the form of Bluish or greenish Mongolian spots. They are usually seen on the back generally disappears at the school age.

Other type of birthmarks known as Port-Wine Stains are also noted in some individuals. These stains gives a purplish red colour or dark red colour to the affected skin.

These types of stains are not raised like strawberry stains. The name Port Wine Stain is derived from a form of urine that is dark maroon in colour. Post Wine Stains are seen in the kids on face and neck area.

Generally, cavernous birthmarks are also seen. Cavernous means’ like a cave” that is present deep inside that earth. Hence, this type of birth mark is present deep beneath the outer layer of skin. It is mainly bluish red in colour. These types of birthmarks are more puffier than strawberry type and usually grows quickly in the first six months. Then their growth is slowed down and starts shirking within 18 months. These marks generally goes away till the child reaches the ten years.

Birthmarks may also appear in the form of moles. Moles are particularly in the form of brown, blue or black spots. Moles are made up of collection of pigment cells or melanocytes, which contains colouring pigment known as Melanin Moles does not hurt and they are not thought to be a disease.

Even some people, consider them as beauty marks or beauty spots. It may be observed that the moles may vary in size and may be raised or hairy. Moles are normally harmless, but they need regular checkup done by doctor. Large sized moles known as giant pigments naevi may become cancerous in due course of time, so require special attention.

Birth Marks are known as stroke bites if they occur on the back of neck and if they occur in between the eyebrows then they are called Angel kisses. In case of strawberry birthmarks, as the name is derived from the fruit, so its looks also somewhat like a strawberry. That it is bright red in colour and sticks out of the skin like strawberry.

Birthmarks may develop due to grouping together of blood vessels in one place on the skin. The reason why the blood vessels get grouped together is not clearly known. Blood vessels are the small tubes that helps in carrying blood throughout the body. These types of birthmarks that occur due to collection of blood vessels are also known as hemangioma.

Treatment of Birthmarks

It is to be kept in mind that birthmarks really are not a big deal and the kids who have them are not different from the kids who do not have them. But in some cases, laser surgery may be required to treat them.
