Bereavement means, literally, to be deprived by death. After someone close to us dies, them we go through a process of mourning. Numbness, anger and sadness, all are part of bereavement.

Bereavement can also cause physical reactions including sleeplessness, loss of energy and loss of appetite. Grief is generally normal. It has been observed that when someone is bereaved, they usually experience an intense feeling of sorrow and grief.

People generally grieve in order to accept a deep loss and carry on with their life. People believe that if we do not grieve at the time of death, or shortly after, then the grief remains bottled up inside us.

This can result in emotional problems or physical illness later on. Though through the grief is usually a painful process, but it is often necessary to ensure our future emotional and physical well being.

Stages of grief are as follows:

There is not any single way to grieve. Everyone is different and each person grieves in his or her own way. However, some stages of grief by people when they are bereaved.

There is no fixed set timescale for any of such stages to occur but it serves to be very helpful to be aware of the stages and should consider that intense emotions and swift changes in mood are normal. The first stage of grief is the feeling of emotionally numb. This feeling may last for a few hours, days or longer.

In some ways, this numbness can help the person to get through the practical arrangements and family pressures that surround the funeral, but if this phase goes on for too long then it could create a problem. Then in the second stage, the numbness may be replaced by a deep yearning for the person who has died.

Person may feel agitated or angry and find it difficult to concentrate, relax or sleep. Person may also feel guilty, dwelling on arguments that he/she had with that person. This period of strong emotion usually give way to bouts of intense sadness, silence and withdrawl from family and friends.

Children go through similar stages of grief, although they may progress through them more quickly. Therefore, some people try to protect children from the death and grieving process. There are many things, which a person can do to help them to cope during this time.

They should ask for help and support asks for help and support from family, friends or a support group. Person should try to express whatever he/she is feeling, be it anger, guilt or sadness. We should accept that something, like death, is beyond our control. By doing so, person is able to mourn properly and avoid problems in the future.
